How safe is the Gyroplane?
The modern Gyroplane is inherently a very safe aircraft, and we fly the latest state-of-the-art machines which are meticulously maintained. In flight we always select sufficient altitude to safely glide to a safe landing area in case of emergency. You will fly with an experienced FAA - Certified Flight Instructor. We are also fair weather flyers.
Is this an aerial tour?
No. The main goal of this flight is teaching you about the easiness and fun of this sport. This is a hands-on flight lesson with an FAA - Certified Flight Instructor. Within few minutes in the air, you should be quite comfortable in flying the aircraft straight and level and doing gentle turns. We want you to come away from your flight with an experience of a lifetime and the feeling of “I can do this.”
Can I bring my camera or water bottle?
No. Loose articles in a open aircraft can be a safety hazard, especially with a spinning propeller behind us. Although we fully understand the desire to record these magic moments, we have found that trying to be a photographer while taking your introductory lesson takes away from the experience. We offer photo packages to document your lesson.
Is there an age limit?
Children must be at least 8 years old. We have no upper limits on age.
Is there a weight limit?
The weight limit is around 250 lbs., please call to discuss your situation and the possibility of flying.
How often do you get cancelled due to weather?
At the Dillingham Airfield we have about 350 flyable days a year. On your way to the North Shore you may experience some rain, it will most likely still be nice at the airport itself! The wind is very consistent and generally blows around 15-20 knots…perfect wind for flying! Also, be aware that if we experience a short weather delay anytime during our daily schedule, it can delay your lesson time as well.
What happens if the engine quits?
The AutoGyro will vertically descend like a parachute and will land safely in a small space the size of a tennis court.
Is the engine very loud?
The engine is a Rotax 912, 4 stroke engine with silencer kit designed for noise reduction. In addition to the sound reduction features, you will also be wearing an intercom headset which not only allows you clear in-flight communication but also reduces outside sound.
How far is it from our hotel?
From Waikiki it is 1 hour driving time depending on traffic. (Check with Google Maps for other locations at bottom of page)
My partner and I want to go at the same time, can we?
Unfortunately, one of the good things about this experience is also why the answer to this question is “no.” This is a unique one-on-one instructional flight experience and the aircraft is designed for only one student and one instructor. There are various attractions in the nearby area if you have someone (or more than one person) accompanying you who doesn’t want to wait at the airfield.
What should we wear?
In general you will be dealing with slightly colder temperatures at flight altitude, and wind in the open cockpit. Shorts and a t-shirt are fine on the ground on a hot day, but in flight we recommend long sleeves to protect your skin from the sun and the wind. Please no flip-flops (barefoot is okay).
What is your cancellation policy?
You may change or cancel your reservation with absolutely no charge to you if you let us know 48 hours or more before your scheduled flight(s). If you cancel your flight(s) within the 48 hour window, we will charge your credit card for the full amount of the flight(s) booked if we are unable to fill your time slots. If we can find someone to take your slots on short notice, we will not charge you.
